You always start off with whichever one is already supplying the house.

At the moment, having signed up with them, it's rarely worth the effort of switching.  There are no good deals to be had anyway.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

If you can default to the SVR you'll be better off than one of the more expensive fixes.

Some good habits for your daughter to get into

    Read those meters every month
    Keep your own records
Read those bills when they come -  make sure there are no estimated readings
    Understand those bills
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Take a photo of the meter(s) clearly showing the reading and meter number on the day of completion - Use a phone so that you get a time stamp on the image.
When you get the first bill, double check the units of gas - You don't want to be charged for (hundreds of) cubic feet when the meter is reading cubic metres.
Her courage will change the world.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.
