Covea Car insurance

I am after some advice please.......... so back last September, I had a 'coming together'in Morrison's car park. The other guy was reversing into a space, and I was reversing out of a space, and neither of us saw each other due to the angle, and we hit each other. Now I have a 4x4 and he had a vauxhall astra. My flat bumper was against his wheel arch, but he claimed that I had caused the damage and that I was to blame (he even called the police!!!! No, they weren't interested)- we exchanged details, and a few weeks later my insurance company called me to say, that he had made a claim, and that do I agree that I was responsible? I said absolutely no way, as we were both as much to blame as each other- I was not going to take responsibility. They sent me paperwork, which I completed and returned with photos of the supposed damage to his car, and the non-existent damage to mine. I also drew diagrams to show how we would have been both at fault equally, and that I believed the damage on his car was old and would've been impossible for me to cause. The insurance company came and viewed the non existent damage on my car, and then I never heard another thing about it. Fast forward to beginning of this month when I came to renew my insurance- my insurers sent me a proof of my no-claims discount, as well as a record of claims....they have said that I was responsible for the above, and they paid out £2500 to the other driver!!!! At no point did they contact me to tell me any outcome, so I believed it had been dropped. I had told them that I was not to blame, but they have taken the other drivers claims that I was, and ,god knows what other lies he told them, and he got a payout!!!! Covea insurance, have now screwed me, as I have just bought new car insurance with another company, and on the form I put that there were no claims made....this I understand makes it fraudulent. But how the hell was I supposed to know that any of this had happened if they didn't tell me?? Does anyone have any advice on how I can proceed with this? As this will now affect my insurance premium with my new insurer. If I had known this guy was going to do this to me, I would certainly have claimed on his insurance as well.
