Sony DVD Player

I purchased a 4K Sony Blue-ray DVD player in October 2019. I have played it a handful of times. The last time was around Christmas 2021 when it worked perfectly. I went to turn it on this week (April 2022) and it would not turn on. It cost me around £300 when I purchased it. I Googled to see if anyone else had this problem and there were a number of people on the Sony forum who had the same problem. I have been in touch with Sony and mentioned it is a known problem with the DVD player but they say it is not known to them. They suggested I take to one of their authorised repair shops and pay to get it repaired. I would have to pay for it to be diagnosed and then pay for it to be repaired. Am I being unreasonable to expect them to repair it for free or don’t I have any rights in this case? Thank you for any help or advice.

Who did you purchase it from? Your consumer rights are with the retailer.1

Unless you bought it direct from Sony, you have no rights against them. Your rights are against the retailer. As it's over 6 months old, the retailer has a right to ask for an independent inspection to determine why it failed. You have to pay for that inspection. If the inspection shows that it had some latent fault at the time it was sold, then you can ask the retailer for a repair, replacement or refund, and a refund of the cost of the inspection. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.1
