  • If "the others" have worked out who you are from your Facebook posts then it ain't nothing to do with your IP address.

Indeed, there is likely much more identity information in other Facebook posts (or related social media, e.g with the same username).

A Facebook group admin has no special access to your user details, only to the group itself.

ETA, just noticed this relates to a local Facebook group, so just as likely to be local knowledge than technology based.

IP address is just a start though. Forum spam controls can have shared data picked up from elsewhere.  I use them a lot
to prevent spammers joining forums and websites.  Although you do need to manually check otherwise it auto bans every

Oh the one who is now in charge of admin on ours does,  I signed up under my maiden name, didn't join any other groups nor did l add any family and he found out who l was and he doesn't even know me.  I think he is a computer geek as well as a control freak who wants everyone to agree with him.  So guess there is no way to have my own opinion without him knowing who it is.  Oh well thanks anyway.

Hi l guess this has been asked many times before so sorry it l am repeating the question.
I don't know to much about IP addresses and how they work so l would like to know if l post something on a forum can l keep my IP address private?  Is it linked to my internet or the internet l used to set up the account?
Not sure if this is the right way to explain my question but hope someone can help.
If you are serious about this, you can use a VPN. Commercial VPNs will allow you to make your traffic appear to come from a different IP address, even a different country, if you want.
NordVPN is heavily advertised. There are others.

Don't under estimate the information available publicly that can be used to identify somebody from a maiden name alone.

I'm a regular on a sleuthing forum and get involved in some really interesting web based hunts for peoples identities and in a few hours people will have full name, full address, family history, school & workplace history, date of birth, price you paid for your house etc - all that from just some random piece of info or a photo.

Surnames are even easier to trace, your birth / marriage certificate, electoral roll, old phonebooks, land registry etc. Along with your approx location being known given that it is a local group you joined - really easy to figure out exactly who you are from your maiden name.

As for having an opinion, can I politely suggest that you shouldn't need to hide your identity to have an opinion. People will respect you and your opinions more on Facebook if you aren't trying to hide behind a fake or obfuscated identity - the principles of the Facebook platform revolve around your real identity.

There are plenty of other groups and forums where you can remain anonymous if you so wish.

I highly doubt that anybody used technical data to trace you, including IP address - there are much easier ways.
