HMRC will not be arguing about the fact that you are due a rebate, that will be obvious from the information on file, the issue will be the timescale to process rebates. If you are in PAYE employment this would normally be done via payroll, if you submit a self assessment the via that. Rebate cheques almost always take longer, you probably have the choice of waiting, or chasing them a lot whilst waiting, both of which will likely have exactly the same timescale for the rebate cheque.

If you owed tax for 2021:22 you would normally have to pay it by 31 January 2023

If a tax refund for 2021:22 is paid after 31 January 2023 HMRC have to add interest to it for late repayment.

You will only be sent a cheque of you fail to engage with HMRC's preferred repayment process i.e. they tell you how much refund is due and you go online and get it transferred to your bank account.

Is there any reason you didn't follow the P50 process or sort out a cumulative tax code rather than wait until now?
