Washing machine connection questions

Hello all,

I hope all is well?

Grandad is getting older now and I have started taking on more and more of his domestic tasks. Grandad does not have a washing machine and has never had one plumbed in. I am no plumber, but from what i see his plumbing system is very old. Currently i am taking his washing to my home in the car, but i want to look at getting a machine for him. The space is not directly next to the sink, but one cupboard space away. A few questions:

1) should I purchase the washing machine first?

2) I have been quoted £230.00 to put the water fittings in place, seems alot?

3) was thinking of purchasing a washing machine from curry's, do they do installation as well, even though there is no fittings in place?

Any other help / assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    1) washing machine connections are standard just make sure the machine fits where you want it. If you purchase the machine first the plumber can plumb it all in for you. If not you will have to connect it.
    2) Depends where you are, what exactly needs doing to the existing pipework. Have you got more than 1 quote?
    3) They wont install if there are no connections ready for them. Their installation covers them connecting the washing machine to the washing machine connections only. (Takes 5 minutes you can DIY) Personally I wouldn't buy from Currys due to past experiences.

No currys wont install the fittings. All their installers do is attach the hose and drain hose to the fittings you have.

£230 is about right to install what you need. Get the machine after having your fittings installed making sure to get a long hose if its a cupboard away. My machine came with a small hose and i had to buy a new long one.

Would your Grandad's local council or his landlord not fit this for him? I think it fit's description of bringing property up to habitable standard.

Don't forget you will need a socket as well as the water and waste pipes to connect to. It is unlikely the plumber will be qualified to install one.
