HMRC PAYE RTI tools software 32bit issue 22/23

New to this site, this may help others.
I run HMRC basic rti tool on my computer. Good spec but runs Windows xp home sp3...
For anyone that remembers that.
I use it for documents data basic business letters, accounts etc very small business.
My computer would not update PAYE tool for  22/23
As 32bit is no longer catered for, which took me a while to discover. I didn't want to upgrade my pc as everything would need to be changed.
Decided on a tax deductible cheap laptop with required specification. Windows 10.
64bit. Loaded software which wouldn't open at first...New laptop took a day to update!!!!...and then PAYE tools  opened...but takes 2 to 3 minutes on mine...so wait and let it load. Backed up RTI data from old pc on usb drive and it transferred ok...again took ages so leave it, have a shower/cup of tea, and it should load. I nearly threw mine in the bin out of frustration. My basic spec laptop probably the cause. This for me was my easiest option. It will probably drag me slowly in to  the present day....hope to this helps.

  • Ahhh... the good old days of Windows XP - how I miss that O/S :(:(

Would need to know more detailed specs and/or model of your new laptop to comment, but you're probably correct in your assumption.
  • Hi...I eventually went for this on offer...
    Lenovo 14w Laptop 14" AMD A6-9220C 4GB RAM 128GB eMMC Windows 10 Pro

Didn't want to get a second hand one, don't know what you going to get..
  • Apologies if my post was misinterpreted; seeing XP mentioned brought back good old memories!  I do not run the HMRC software you mentioned but have an overall interest in computers and was keen to see your laptops specs.

Processor; very low spec.  I run an i3-2100 processor that generally leaves the A6-9220C behind (and bear in mind that mine is an old 2nd Generation type and we are currently seeing the release of 12th Generation).

RAM; very low at 4GB and I would have recommended a minimum of 8GB.

eMMC drive; these are generally very slow drives and you would probably have been better off with an SSD type drive.

In summary; unfortunately, you cannot do much.  From my research, the RAM and eMMC are both soldered directly onto the motherboard and even if you could upgrade those, my fear would be that the processor will still be its undoing - that and the further cost and hassle involved.

AMD A6 for £300 seems like a non bargain to me. Dual core 6w CPU. Single channel memory only 4GB.

I know a lot of stuff is still hard to get at decent prices but I think you could have done better. Going to be obsolete
a lot sooner than I would want for that amount of money.

Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...

  • Thanks for that, no I quite agree, I wouldn't pay £300 either....mine cost me £159 new sealed box. If I was upgrading my whole set up I'd happily pay double £300...I only need it for the HMRC PAYE tools software. So for me that was the easiest cheapest option....not for everyone. Now it's up and running it's much quicker.. Just hoping it explains for others the software issue.

  • For anyone else...my post is for the technical issue. If all the IT whizzes out the would like to pick on who has what spec and why and how much...then post it to someone who might be interested...it'll be who's got the biggest fastest most expensive car next ...however cheap and low spec my option is...it works and I haven't spent hundreds of pounds...and it's tax deductible and it's cheaper than paying an accountant...!!

    Hi Kasper00,

I definitely misinterpreted your post as maybe wanting to know why your new laptop was slow and your associated frustration - my bad :(

Certainly wasn't trying to debate 'who has the longest stick' kind of thing - sincere apologies.
