"you have paid too much tax. HMRC owes you.." letter - how can I claim my refund???

I recently applied for the tax rebate for working from home.  I have now received a letter from HMRC stating "you have paid too much tax.  HMRC owes you.."  The letter suggests that I can claim the refund online at www.gov.uk/p800refund.

I've googled www.gov.uk/p800refund and this website doesn't even exist! It just takes me to HMRC's income tax checker website.  When I login to this website, it tells me that my income tax hasn't been calculated yet.  There's no option to request the tax refund, nor does it even mention I'm owed a refund.

Has anybody had this issue and if so how did you get your money?  Absolutely staggering how they can't get this right.  If they've got the facility to inform taxpayers that they're owed taxed, how are they so inept that they can't even set their website up to match the advice that's contained within their own letter?  It's baffling.

  • Have you logged into your Personal Tax Account and checked earlier tax years?

When the calculation was issued it was probably the latest complete tax year (2020:21) but now we are past 05:04:2022 things have moved on a year.

Login to your personal tax account.

Refunds are normally issued in July, even paid straight into your bank if you add your bank details in.

Hmrc will eventually calculate and give you your refund. May take 2 years. If you do self assessment then it’s same year.

Since the OP has received a letter saying he has paid too much tax and inviting him to claim it I think it is safe to say it has already been calculated.
  • If you are PAYE they will repay it through your tax code, unless you call and somehow find the right person to speak to who will authorize a BACs transfer right there and then, to hit your account within around 5 days. If the amount is significant, it may be worth making an appointment at your local tax office. They tend to be really helpful, don't be afraid of going to see them.

HMRC never refund tax overpaid in one year via the tax code of a later tax year.

There are no local tax offices anymore, they were virtually all closed a number of years ago.
