Scraping out some gravel (horrible job but quite easy) will show you tf the bricks are dry so if it's draining well.
If they are a green colour there's a bit of damp.
I didn't enjoy doing it but it was useful to know and be reassured. I did have some dampness under the patio door sill area and this can be a thing. Think water drips down the doors and sill.
I just prop a wood batten, tiles over that stretch in winter when it's not looked at.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

  • Update:

So I've taken information from various sources including your help here and come up with this plan with the landscaper. Can anyone please help if this sounds reasonable/ acceptable in terms of NHBC standards?

    • Existing gravel strip will remain around house with recesses for air bricks below ground level. Gravel currently comes up to exactly the level of the DPC with air bricks below (not great I know).
    • The porcelain patio will meet the same height as the gravel strip with no extra drainage put in here.
    • Patio will slope away from house and towards brick retaining wall (not timber any more).
    • There will be an aco drainage channel installed on the patio immediately in front of the retaining wall. This will be linked to existing downpipe drains.
    • There will be weep vents in the retaining wall which will drain water from the existing grass (sloped towards patio/ retaining wall) onto the patio (but plan is for this to be drained into the aco channel above).

  • Pinkcloud 17 have you thought about having decking installed instead of a patio. You could have it at the same height as the internal floor of the house and if have composite there's little maintenance required

Yes I don't really like decking. Thanks for your suggestion though. :)

With a retaining wall it's best to have a drainage system behind the wall as well as weep holes. Weeps on their own soon block up in clay soil.
