She'll and Direct Debits

Options
I was previously with Green energy pay £55.00 per month. I was in credit with them but still had to pay shell money for a bill of over £100. I have continued to pay the £55.00 and been asking them to advise what my new direct debit is for some time. I now received an email saying I was now to pay £179.00 per month. I am single and live along and would never be able to pay this amount. I calculated that if energy had gone up by 12% initially and then now by 54%, giving a total of 66%- mm direct debit should be about 91 pounds per month. No to mention I am paying the direct debits all this time. I am at wits end trying to contact them to see how they calculated this. Can anyone advise me. Am I wrong about the % increase. Any help would be appreciated. I am on a low income.

Sadly Dad's are not about what you pay but the energy you use.

Do you know your kWh usage over the past year for Electricity and Gas ?

Have you just come off a fixed rate and what is your new tariff and rates.

Lastly are you in debt or credit as of today and how much?

That way we can do some calculations

    Welcome to the forum.
If you've been paying £55 since Green went bust, you're probably in several hundred pounds of arrears. Shell will set your new DD at a level that will reduce your arrears as well as meeting your ongoing emergy use.
Do you have an on-line account with Shell? Can you see any account balance there? Have you been providing regular meter readings?

Shell are just dividing there  variable tariff by 12 months instead of actual looking at your individual usage trying it on , change your direct debit to a variable direct debit and then you will only pay for energy you use each month .

Though be careful with variable direct debits - bills will be much lower in the summer, but you may end up with some substantial three-figure bills during the winter months.

Also not sure what happens if you are already in arrears several hundred pounds like @QrizB suspects. I assume they will than deduct everything you own.

Variable direct debit only works if you are in credit at the start or can afford to pay the complete bill.
