Reading a Smart Meter if the in-home display isn't working

My father-in-law had a smart meter installed a few years ago, and then the in-home display broke.  Trying to read the meter was nightmare, with a really complex sequence of buttons to press to get to the actual reading (a YouTube video showed me how to do it).  Are the new meters easy to use and easy to read?  With my current non-smart meter I don't need any instructions  to read it - I just look at the screen!

I think it depends what kind of meter you have. Mine's dead easy, you just press one button and it cycles through the readings.

I was always used to reading my own meter but when I moved in here, there was a smart meter which I'd never had before and didn't know how to read it. I phoned Scottish Power who was the supplier at the time and I was told to press any button which was the wrong information.. On speaking to a second person, I was told to press number 9, which then gave me the reading but I don't know if the same applies to all smart meters.
  • Hi,

Who fitted the meters, then someone with some similar might be able to help.

For mine the electric reading is always on and the gas need a button press (A) to wake it up (much like non smart electronic ones did).
