Cohabiting Income Tax

My partner and I live together. She has a full time job and I receive an occupational pension and some benefits - I pay no tax. She seems to be under the impression that she is having to pay more tax because she lives with me. Unfortunately, her employer does not provide paper pay slips and she cannot log into the Sage account to access her pay information.

So, as I have no specific information, I just wanted to ask a general question before taking this any further, does a working person pay more tax if they are cohabiting?

    No.
What tax does she think is affected?
Is she thinking of tax credits or Benefits?

Some other things are affected if you cohabit (like HICBC).

she needs to get a login for sage and see what the situation is - the basic answer is that it should make no difference to her tax at all unless child benefit is involved (or something like that )

Income Tax. She says that she has been paying more tax since she moved in and seems to think that cohabiting is the reason why. I said that I didn't think that she should be and maybe she had an emergency tax code. Currently, the only way she finds out how much she has been paid is by phoning her bank on pay day.

When she tries to log onto Sage, she can't and asks to reset her password. She gets a message saying that an e-mail has been sent but she doesn't receive it. She only has two e-mail accounts and they are not in the spam folder of either. Her employer doesn't seem to be much help.

If it is anything like my employer, they insisted we used the work e-mail for sage  ( I already had my own, an NHS one etc etc but they insisted on their own NHS one) - however they forgot to tell us then of course because we never used it the passwords needing resetting . I managed to persuade accounts to send me my payslip as a pdf on my personal e-mail in the end.

Seriously - she needs to get access to those, check what e-mail the company have used for her on sage as it sounds like there may be an error in coding and it is nothing to do with you two living together.  Next she needs to use at least limited online banking to check the balance .. or check it at the cash machine, pain having to phone the bank to check.

Yes, everything you say is true but getting her to do these things is not a simple matter but I'm working on it.

Well, to be fair, she does up to a point but she says she is too busy when she is at work to sort it out and she is too knackered when she gets home.

Her gross income seems to be less.

Yes, but NIC would have remained the same (this goes back months - before the announced rise). No pension as far as I know.

As I said in the first instance, I couldn't go into specifics, I just wanted to ask a general question.
