Insurance for my car that allows partner to use for business use
I’m having trouble finding car insurance that is clear about what the insurer means by spouse and or partner. Has anyone else had a similar issue? I’d be interested in advice, as there are so many companies that avoid speaking with you at all cost and aren’t even clear when you do.
For example, is there a general acceptance with U.K. car insurance as there is in other countries, that if you live with someone as if married ie shared responsibility for finances etc, that for insurance purposes you can assume by spouse they mean both married and living with someone as if married, not just the former?
I’ve used a comparison website to obtain quotes to insure my partner on my car as a named driver for business use, and used the correct terminology for what I need and the status of our relationship.
However, when I’ve checked the form completed on the insurance company’s website and also what they present as a policy document, it is still often different. They have conflicting terms and definitions between their own forms and summary of cover when compared with the resulting policy, certificate and terms offered following acceptance. They often offer a quote but the summary says business use for main driver and spouse only. I’m finding also the term spouse is sometimes inclusive of partner on the basis we’re living together as if married, and sometimes not.
To add to the problem what I’ve entered on the comparison site and the clarity they offer in relation to this, is often different to what is actually submitted on the insurance company forms to obtain quotes, with no indication there is a discrepancy.
I realise it is important to check anything before agreeing, but it’s quite staggering the errors that occur with something that is so important, to make sure it is correct so as to avoid accidentally not being covered.
It would really help if the U.K. industry got with the times and were consistent in use of terminology.
