Should I keep unused credit cards open?

Options
I've finished paying off all my credit card and loan debt as of last week.

I'll keep using one of my cards for some monthly spending and pay it off each month to maintain my credit history. I also have broadband/phone contracts which show up on the report too.

Is it worth keeping open two credit cards I have no plans to use either a) for an emergency or b) to maintain a high level of available credit so my % utilisation is low?

Online search seems to indicate that having a load of unused credit is a good thing, but they may of course be biased towards getting people having credit.

Comments

  • Ensure you have 2 different cards from 2 entirely different lenders e.g. Halifax and HSBC not Halifax and Lloyds and ideally 1 Mastercard and 1 Visa, use both periodically. You don't need 3 but at the same time there is no reason to close the third and you might as well use it as they might have useful offers in the future
