Gas and Electricity - Monthly DD versus quarterly bills

Hi all, apologies if this has been asked before but I couldn't find anything when I searched! I have always paid my gas and electricity by monthly DD but someone told me that it was cheaper to pay quarterly (obviously making sure you put money to one side each month). Does any one have any experience of this?
Also, sorry additional question! I keep being chased by British Gas to install new meters but I'm loathe because of people's experience of the bills being increased. Does anyone have any experience of bills actually going down when they switch to new meters???
