My Rates above the price cap?

My first post so please be gentle.  I have been looking at the email my energy provider, Shell sent to me in February telling me what my rates would be.  Looking into this further they appear to be above the price cap.  I don't trust them as far as i could throw them can anyone advise?

Gas standing charge 26.11 (price cap says 27.22) so that's ok, but the rate per unit i am paying is 7.757 and the price cap is 7.37
Electric standing charge is 53.51 but the price cap is 45.34, and my rate per unit is 31.162 but the price cap is 28.34.

I pay with my debit card monthly, but haven't set up a direct debit as they wanted it to be variable and I just cant budget for a variable dd.  Although I pay a high amount every month to help build my credit up for the winter.  I am live in Cheshire, as I believe there is a change in price caps depending on where you live.

If someone could explain if the above is correct i would be very grateful.

There isn't just one cap rate, it varies by region, by payment method and by metering type.
The numbers you are using to compare against are just an average of all the regions for payment by direct debit.
Also the cap only applies to the Standard Variable Tariff, not to a fixed tariff...
The rates you have given are correct for the 'North Wales & Mersey ' region when on a standard credit payment method, not DD.

Welcome to the forum. MWT has given you the correct info.
I pay with my debit card monthly ...
This is the most expensive method of payment.
... haven't set up a direct debit as they wanted it to be variable and I just cant budget for a variable dd.
A fixed budget DD has a lower cap (see link in my signature) and would save you money. Shell definitely offer fixed budget DD as an option.

  • I am with EONNext and the unit prices on their website from today are way above the rates for Yorkshire as stated on Martin's website. Anyone know why this is please? I pay via direct debit.

As the six other threads on this topic have described, the website rates are not yet showing the new cap. Ignore them.

Yes, lots of suppliers haven't updated their websites yet. It's a widespread problem. You won't be charged these rates.
