I recently bought a school shirt for my son from Matalan for £8. It duly arrived and I was surprised to see all the labels on the shirt said £7. It's not really the £1 I'm bothered about too much but I would like to know where I stand legally. I wrote and they responded:

Thank you for contacting Matalan Customer Care,

Following your email regarding your order number XXXXXXXX, please bear in mind that all items on the orders are charged for the price which was at the time of the placing the order on the website.

If any changes to the price of any item happens, it will not affect any order you have already placed with us as stated in our Terms and Conditions to which you have agreed upon placing the order with us.

I do apologise for any inconvenience caused.

As above.  You may also return the shirt for a refund if you received it less than 14 days ago, but that's nothing to do with the pricing.

You saw it for £8, you paid £8.
What is on the shirt doesn’t matter :)

Only a £1 so no big deal but it's interesting to find out from you guys what the legal stance is. At the end of the day, it just leaves a slightly nasty taste in my mouth. They should have removed the labels then I wouldn't have been any the wiser. Thank you all anyway for your wisdom.

How would you have felt if they left on labels with a higher price?

This isn't really anything do with consumer rights, rather general musings, but (although it would maybe fall under misleading actions if done deliberately) the customer's perception is important for retaining loyalty so when they pay £8 and it says £7 they get a bad feeling, if they paid £8 and it said £9 they'd get a good feeling. The type of feeling they experience would certainly affect their future custom.

Sadly it's a game of consume on mass rather than enjoy individual consumption.

My feelings weren't brought into question so that's an odd thing to bring up? I was after the legality which has been answered. Thank you to the people who kept to the question asked.

You brought your feelings up, didn't you?
