I would be inclined to take up BA's offer to check your bags in the night before.  You can go by bus as you normally would do and take a lot of pressure off the following morning.
They also must have good reason for suggesting you get there earlier on the morning of departure so I would do that too.  Call the cab company and adjust your booking for an hour earlier.  They will be well used to customers' arrangements changing and I'm sure it won't be a problem.

Yes. See this thread for an awful warning:

Well, we didn't do the drop bags a day ahead - the decision was really that the time slot we were given 6 - 9 pm clashed with a prior arrangement.  Plus it was a jolly cheek by BA, disrespectful of my time having any value, likely counterproductive in creating more not less queues, and airport baggage handling is structured to keep stuff moving so we'd have just given them more time to lose the cases.

We did follow the advice to get an earlier cab do we get to the airport for 03:30 as per the time in the email.  Only to find check in not open until 03:45, bag drop not until 04:00, security not open until 04:30, and now sitting outside the lounge which does not open until 05:00.

Poor communication by BA and makes for a grumpy start to a holiday.

FYI - we did try to do online check in the day before but it was not working so had to do real life check in at the airport.

I am pleased the actual flight experience was so much better than all the pre-flight shenanigans 🙂

Airlines will always be very cautious and tell you to get there earlier than is really necessary in 90% of cases to deal with that 10% of cases where there are staff shortages etc and so you dont blame them if you are close to missing or miss your flight etc.

Personally it depends very much where we are flying too, which airline etc. If Virgin UC then go a touch earlier as its always a bit of fun to use their drive through check-in and then book your complementary spa treatment (or in my case, prop up the bar as the Mrs takes hers and mine). BA at LHR would typically go later as can use the Fast Track security and have spent too many days in their lounges for it to be a destination any more (particular if its still as it was like with our last flight and there's a 30 minute wait on any drinks/cold food and 1hr on hot food).

To the original Q... pre-scheduled Uber simply requests a car to arrive within 10 minutes of your stated time, they dont guarantee one will be available.
