Strange charging cable issue

I just swapped from Moto G7 to G31
The supplied charging cable works fine but the older cables that I have (E bay) won't charge.
All are USB to USB-c plugged into the same USB socket.
Why won't the generic cables charge the new phone?

Are you using a new charger supplied with the G31?0

I can only imagine that the generic cable is a "charge only" (or is damaged to render it thus). The new phone may "talk" to the new charger to control the charge cycle.
Have you tried old charger-->old cable-->new phone?1 -

I have tried about 5/6 charger plugs -->three 'eBay' cables ( bought a 3 pack) --> new phone ............... no joy!

As suggested above, mobile charging involves a negotiation between charger and mobile. The cable may not support the charge types (too high/low resistance/inductance).
I assume as these were a 3 pack from eBay, they were at the value end of the spectrum...
Finally, it could be that the plugs on the eBay cables dont 'quite' fit.0 -

I think the "don't quite fit" comment was meant for the phone end not the charger end.Jenni x1

You'd think so, eh? But every standard has a tolerance, and eBay specials may treat those tolerance limits like the Pirate's Code ... more of a guideline than an actual code.
