Recommend a Grass Trimmer and a Hedge Trimmer

Hi all,

I’ve asked on here before regarding grass trimmer recommendations… but thought I’d ask again, as I not only need a grass trimmer, but also a hedge trimmer. Also, I’ve actually recently purchased a petrol multitool… which has gone wrong already, so hence to the request for recommendations!

Got the 4-in-1 2-stroke from Titan, at Screwfix
https://www.screwfix.com/p/titan-ttk587gdo-25-4cc-petrol-landscaping-multi-tool/48423

First time I used it, two weeks ago, it cut out twice when idling. Second time I used it, on Saturday, it wouldn’t turn off at the switch, so had to use the choke! Mental, really. Shame really, as £160 is an absolute bargain.

Anyway, my trust in it being a reliable machine has obviously diminished.

I don’t actually need the chainsaw and brush cutter attachments… but got this model over the 2-in-1 (£10 cheaper), as this model has a straight shaft grass trimmer.

So, I’m either going to take it back and get a replacement and hope it runs well… or take it back, get my £160 back, and get something else!

Any suggestions for a decent straight shaft grass trimmer and a long reach hedge trimmer?

Stihl’s entry level grass trimmer looks nice, but is a bent shaft. Their entry level hedge trimmer looks good too, but not long reach!

Thanks in advance.

I would be inclined to take it back and get it replaced.  Screwfix are generally pretty good with their customer service, and most of the reviews are positive.  I don't normally put too much trust in reviews but Screwfix is used by trade as much as public and they are likely to be less forgiving of problems.

It really depends on the amount of time you'll use the tools and whether all the grunt in petrol power is needed.
For my brushcutting I bought a Honda 35cc, because it's a 4 stroke with none of the mucking about mixing 2 stroke and it starts as easily as my old Honda 50 motorbike did back in the dark ages. 12 years on, some pretty bits have fallen off and the silencer is toast, but it keeps going and I expect it to last another few years yet. At £400 it was a bargain, because I do a lot with it. It would be overkill for a suburban garden, where I'd now probably go battery power.
Contrast the above with a long reach electric hedgetrimmer I got from Aldi for £60 about 8 years ago. It's on its last legs now, but I only use it in the autumn and never further than 50' from a power point, so it's been fine for a very minimal outlay. I know a Stihl or similar would be much better, but it gets through the jobs and does all that's required.
Screwfix are very good at replacing and refunding, usually without comment if you have the receipt etc.

    Brilliant, thanks both.

Think I'll do just that – take it back, get it replaced, and go from there.

Grass trimming, I'll be using it every few weeks I'd imagine, along with when I cut the grass.

Hedge trimming, lesser so – probably once every month or two. But maybe more now I have the tool to play with!

We've a 120ft long back garden, with hedges up both sides, and a fair amount of edging  around then house, shed, flower beds, trees, etc (where grass trimming is concerned).
