Headphones - gadget for better sound?

Hello,
Here goes with another "dim" question...
I have some ordinary head phones which I plug into the computer to listen to audio files. They have what I think is a standard jack on them.
Although I turn the volume up to the highest position on the software I use to play the audio, sometimes it isn't loud enough.
Is there some gadget, such as an amplifier or some sort that I could get to increase the volume - something compatible for use with ordinary headphones and for plugging into computer?
I've thought of popping into Maplins to ask them but just haven't had any time to do this yet so thought I'd seek some advice on here first.
Many thanks for any tips.
Regards

Perhaps a headphone amp - though these are for usually for multiple headphone output.

What is the speaker volume set at in the sound settings in the control panel? Sometimes this can be set rather low and it overrides other software's volume control.0
