I am considering a refurbished Dell over a new one - what are the main pro and cons when buying such a machine from say a certified outlet?
Thank you

Well it all depends on where you're buying it from, are you asking about Dell refurbished from the Dell outlet?

I had looked at the Dell outlet, but it was more a wider question of any certified reseller? I assume from Dell directly it would be ok

Well, the main pro is that it'll be cheaper, the main con that it won't be new!
    What else were you expecting?

I'm using a new "dented or scratched" laptop from the Dell outlet, so it's new but not perfect to look at but works fine. The only thing I can find wrong with it is that the delete button stands a bit proud on the keyboard.

So they sell factory "seconds" - that could be of interest as I buy them for other things.

@thegrinch Refurbs are one of the last bastions of moneysaving!
I’m happy with a refurbished HP Pavilion 14” laptop I bought over 2 years ago from Laptops Direct. They do come with a 12 months warranty, professionally refurbished, loads cheaper than buying the same one new. They only come in plain packaging, rather than the manufacturers box, but I don’t think there’s a problem with that.

  • Think of it as being like the laptop you've used in the office for the last couple of years. Perfectly fine, works just great and does the job but isn't shiny & new. But it more than does the job.

No. Don't think of it like that. DELL Outlet Certified Refurbished laptops will be as new. Their Scratch & Dent may have a minor defect, but still in excellent condition.

Of course if you buy a B or C Grade from elsewhere, the quality may vary. But it's ridiculous to suggest that they will have two years of wear.

All of the Refurbished laptops I have purchased for myself have been as new. No wear at all. Some still have original plastic stuck to them.

I’m lost, which is pretty normal.

"DELL Outlet Certified Refurbished laptops will be as new."

If it’s a machine that is a couple of years old, surely the refurbishment process can’t make it like new? All the moving parts, like keyboard and hinges have had a part of their useful life used up. The battery has less capacity than a new one, as well obviously as being nearer the point it needs replacement. The Ssd is nearer the point where it suddenly fails.

Or, do the refurbishers replace all those parts?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
