Buying a used car?

Hi there,
I’m new to this site and basically I have joined to ask questions when looking to buy a used car. I’m in the process of changing mine as its not ULEZ so really I just was looking for some advice when purchasing a new one. I haven’t bought a used car in some years and things have changed. I understand everything can now be transferred online I.e. V5, my question is do I need to get a car checked over by a mechanic or someone like that prior to buying? I’m not really clued up on cars so wouldn’t know what to look for, do I need to check a HPI check done? Is the MOT history anything to go by? Sorry for all the questions I am just really nervous! Thank you in advance.

You don't "need" to as such - but if you're not mechanically-minded then it's probably a wise move.  Depends a lot on the age of the car, and whether you're buying privately or from a reputable dealer.  With a private sale you have very little comeback once the deal is done, so it's often a good idea to get it checked over.  You can get an inspection from the AA or RAC (you don't need to be a member).  They're not cheap, but can give you some peace of mind, especially if you're spending a lot of money.  Or are you lucky enough to have a friendly local mechanic who'd look it over for the price of a few beers?
If you're buying from a reputable dealer then arguably it's not quite so important, as they should offer a warranty (even if it's only for 6 months or so).  But it's your choice as to whether the cost of a professional inspection is worth it.
All that aside, do make sure you take it for a good test drive.  Even if you know nothing about mechanical stuff, as a driver you'll be able to tell whether the brakes work, whether there's any odd noises coming from the engine or gearbox, whether the electric windows and the radio work, whether there are any warning lights showing on the dashboard, etc. etc. etc.

An HPI check is well worthwhile.  If you're buying privately then you'll need to pay for one yourself, but most dealerships will have already done an HPI anyway (to protect themselves, as much as anything) - and will be more than happy to show you the certificate.
MOT history - can give some clues as to the car's past life.  Do the mileage readings tally up?  Has it been doing "average" mileage each year?  Has it been passing previous MOT's first time, are there any outstanding advisories?  If it always passes first time, or with only a very minor fault needing to be rectified, that can give an indication that the previous owner looked after it, replaced stuff when it was needed, etc.  Conversely, lots of failures followed by repairs/retests can indicate that the previous owner didn't care too much, and the only time they thought about the car was when it was due for MOT - "bung it in, see what needs fixing, then that's it for another year".
