Meter Problem In Rented Home?
My daughter with her family live in a rented house, been there around 10 years. It was only after they were settled in for a few months they found out that the home attached to theirs was actually divided section of one large house. The landlords son used to live there, it's like a one bed home, had its own front rear door etc.
He's since moved out and around 2 others have occupied it since on a rental basis.
Now this is where it gets interesting, both homes only have the one gas/electric meter and both are in my daughter's side of the property. I've queried this many times with her about bill paying and energy usage etc, who knows what one another uses splitting the bill, even paying the bill? Well there is an arrangement with the landlord for paying which I would never get too much involved in asking about, not my problem so to speak. Daughters OH seems reasonably happy with the situation, I know I wouldn't be.
Here's the thing now, had a phone call today the energy company are now pitching up to install a smart meter sometime, I guess in the daughters side of the property.
I don't know if any of this sound legal, illegal, whatever are landlords allowed to do this. It seems from the son in law he's happy with the arrangement or rather he'd not rock the boat for fear of being chucked out of the property.
Thoughts anyone?

My 2ps worth, if son in law is happy not rocking the boat leave it at that, it's his family, home and bills so why get involved?

Without knowing the arrangement over the paying of bills it is difficult to comment.
Normally in this situation where two properties are supplied by one set of meters the rent will including bills so it doesn't get messy.
