Hi,

Sorry if this is a stupid question.... If I put the boiler on to provide hot water, then may i as well put the heating on since the boiler is on anyway? and vice versa.

Does this save any money than let's say having the water on for an hour, then a few hours later then putting the heating on?

Should I always have them on at the same time rather than separately?

Thank you

What type of system do you have? One with a hot water storage tank or one that uses a combi-boiler?

Depends on your system, sometimes just having the water on can use slightly more gas because the boiler will fire, reach it's maximum temperature very quickly due to the fact that the pipe loop between boiler and tank is very short and then turn off until the return temperature is low enough to come back on.
When the heating is on also, there's far more demand on the system, so it will take far longer for the boiler to reach it's cut-off temperature. This can also mean efficiency is better and that the hot water will rise to temperature quicker.
But putting the heating on just because the water is on is daft if you don't actually need the heating, plus, having them both on at the same time will cause the house to heat up slightly slower, due to the additional demand.
Personally I always have them both on at the same time, but the hot water is only on once per day.

Thanks, obviously I don't put the heating on just because the water is on when it's not needed. Only on the cold days would I do this :-)
