When to get in touch with Solicitors?

Hey everyone,
Me and my partner are FTB. We reserved a new build property around 10 days ago and instructed our Mortgage Broker to apply for the mortgage last Wednesday which were still waiting to hear back from (I understand this can take a few weeks).
We're going with the Solicitor that the Mortgage Broker recommended. Usually I would be cynical of this but I've researched them and coincidently a colleague had used the same firm and had a good experience. Our Mortgage Broker said the Solicitor would be in touch with us via letter. However, we've not yet heard anything. Is this normal?
Normally I wouldn't worry but we haven't actually had direct contact with the Solicitor (i.e. Hello my name is X and I want to purchase X property, please can you be my Solicitor..!) as the Mortgage Broker did this for us.
Is it worth giving them a ring before we get our Mortgage agreed or should I wait until after?
Thanks
