One possibilty which is likely is that there has been a short power cut or power surge which has fried the digital electric meter s and digital gas meters with an energy pulse on restart once power is restored. I have seen many properties like this in a small area which affected every third house .
I once had it explained by a Northern Power Grid employee why its every third house

Probably due to 3 phase mains.

That might explain a dead electricity meter but it would have to be in the realms of EMP to take out a battery powered gas meter...
... and even the electricity meter would be expected to fail to a blank screen, not just to retain the last reading...

Can you post the two photos you have taken of the meters?

The blank screens on electric lose all the readings and the readings cannot be recovered . The ones I ve been seeing for years are mostly the small white digital meter made by a few different companies mainly Ampybut plenty other types go blank including the prepay meters   . I ve never known any supplier recover any blank screen meter reads. I only wish they could .ts probably possible but could cost too much money
i Gas smart meter could possibly be rendered blank by a strong surge as its connected to the electric smart meter by short distance Zigbee . Other than that explanation its a million to one odds that both meters pack in at the same time or even same month  unless human hands help it along  ..Which I have seen happen .
Gas meter batteries do give up from 6 years from new onwards  though and that will make the screen blank . Possibly that can be recovered with a new battery .Suppliers do not usually put in new batteries on gas meters except old prepay meters  but exchange for new ones

The only time a meter should stop recording usage is when the meters are disconnected for non payment but they normally put in prepayment meters and claim the arrears back through a daily payment plan.
Suppliers have stopped disconnecting years ago except in extreme circumstances of constant meter bypassing . They are not allowed to disconnect electric in those circumstances but can remove gas meters and cap .

Since I haven't seen anyone else answering it, the meters belong to the suppliers, and the suppliers have a legal duty to maintain them in working order.

But it seems an amazing coincidence that both would fail at the same time.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
