15 year old house requires completely new roof

Irrespective it's unlikely anyone is 'to blame' and even less likely that you'll get anyone else to pay for it. If there was no visible damage to tiles at the time of survey then a surveyor isn't going to check the provenance of the tiles
30yrs isn't an unreasonable expectation but plenty will be either side of that and 15yrs isn't a short period - especially at a time when profit comes before quality

Agree. If 15 years was an acceptable lifespan for tiles, we'd be hearing of and seeing many more roofs being replaced.

when I saw the post title I assumed it would be some Spanish or Chinese slates. I know of an estate locally and also a hotel that was roofed with either of these cheap slates about 20 years ago and all are in need of a re-roof already. it just crumbles in your hand, you can pick bits out of the gutter and write on the walls with it like it's chalk.
another story, about 5 years ago I was working on an extension and I remember wondering why the roofers weren't there and why they had only laid 2 rows of tiles (and broken loads of them in the process) and then abandoned the job for almost a week despite it being really nice weather. I later found out there was a bad batch of tiles and they were all really brittle and they were waiting for the supplier to replace the tiles with some other brand, I got one out of the pack and knocked on it like you would knock on a door and it shattered in two, they were Marleys too..

I've finally had the roof completed and it looks absolutely superb but that's no real consolation after the total cost.
After speaking with the roofers and looking at the damage close to had, the ridges literally crumbled in your hand like a wasps nest does. We had been told that we may still be covered by NHBC insurance but alas that had expired some time back so just miss out. So I was wondering if there are any specialist law firms that would deal with things like this were a builder has built a house using substandard products to save money. Some one is liable for this and that is the building firm.1 -
In the unlikely event the building firm is still trading you can bet it’ll be liquidated PDQ at the first sign of any claim.
Not that you’d have any claim against them anyway. Had you purchased the property from them directly you might, but even then…
You need to move on, don’t throw good money after bad.

Some one is liable for this and that is the building firm.You'll be able to find legal firms that will happily take your money to open a file... the problem you may have is that once the budget has been used up they may tell you that proving the building company should be liable for the cost of your replacement roof will be an uphill and expensive task, and has limited (read 'zero') chance of sucess.15 years life for a roof is disappointing, but once any guarantee has expired the property owner is really on their own... hence the advice to get a good quality survey done before buying.0
