Accurate meter reading if house has been empty?

We pay by direct debit and my partner is in credit but they won’t give the money back and instead stated it stays in the account until 1) it’s used or 2) we leave and it’s deducted from a final bill I believe which is annoying. I appreciate the help and words around stressing too much about meter readings!! I understands bills will rise anyway for everyone I just wanted to make sure we wouldn’t be caught out or if there was anything we needed to do today otherwise we’d have a hefty bill!0
