Three Phase Electricity Smart Meter Frustration

In a quandary about changing away from our current electricity supplier Bulb who do not currently install 3 phase Smart Meters. We have PV's and stayed with Bulb due to fuel crisis and hoped they would change policy. We cannot get benefit from export payments. I need to find a supplier that fits 3 phase smart meters and with a tariff that means I won't end up worse off even with export payments. I would welcome any advice.

  • I am in the same position. I am currently with BG and am trying to contact them to ask when/if three phase smart meters will become available. I had booked a smart meter appointment last Feb but when the engineer came he said he hadn't realised it was three phase and they didn't have three phase smart meters. I have also emailed Octopus to ask them if they have three phase smart meters available yet. Let me know if you get any answers. I will do the same.

Yes, Octopus have 3-phase smart meters.
They have been installing them for a little while now.

A smart meter is in no way going to help you cut down usage unless you are a grade 1 idiot. It is neither here nor there. You can cut down anyway,

It is on the other-hand rather important if you have EV+solar and want to make proper use of the 3 phases for charging and solar export along with the appropriate tariffs...

As MWT says, it is an important bit of kit for generation export and for EV off peak tariffs. Perhaps think before you post rather than jumping to conclusions about why someone needs a smart meter. Thanks MWT about the information about Octopus. Do you have a three phase smart meter?  Also anyone got information about the availability from other suppliers?

Thanks MWT about the information about Octopus. Do you have a three phase smart meter?
No, but I've seen a couple of recent reports from people who have had them installed, including scheduling a managed install to fit in with a 3-phase upgrade, so the team at Octopus were on the ball with that one.
For you that wouldn't matter so much of course if you already have 3-phase.
