Hot water - cheaper from gas boiler or the kettle? For small-ish amounts

With my combi-boiler, if I start from a cold boiler and turn on the hot tap of my kitchen sink to fill a washing up bowl, the combination of initial cold water and subsequent hot water fills the bowl with warm water with no waste water. I assume most have tried this already but give it a go if not
