Cigarette Smoke

Hi Everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone knowledgeable on this can advise appropriately.  I live in a first floor flat and the cigarette smoke from the people living downstairs is coming up into my flat, which is a real problem.  I have asked a flooring company who thought putting plywood down would help, but I'm not convinced.  I had someone out to look in my hallway cupboard which is where it is coming up worse, he thought he had sorted the issue but it has made no difference.  I have read articles that I can not sort this problem by doing work from my flat, the flat below will need the work.

Please can anyone advise, I don't want to spend money and then find it hasn't worked.  Thanks alot

If it's a rented flat you need to speak to the landlord.  If it's a leasehold maybe it's something the freeholder should look into.

I had this problem with my neighbour. Im afraid their isn't much you can do. It used to be a terrible problem for me so I really feel for you. My neighbour has since passed away and the smell of smoke has stopped. You could try talking to your neighbour maybe

I went round my flat filling the skirting, where it meets the wall and floor, did the same round my windows. Put draught excluders round the front door and a curtain in the porch type area.

No more Herby smoke smells get in my flat, unless I open the windows and wheh I walk out my front door.

I had a similar issue in my last flat, smoke from my downstairs neighbor kept creeping in, especially through the vents and cracks along the skirting boards. Sealing up those gaps with caulk and weather stripping helped reduce it a bit, but it didn’t completely stop it. I also tried using an air purifier with a HEPA filter, which made a noticeable difference in cutting down the smell indoors.
