Fraud - need an account

Hi couldn’t find a thread that fits. In 2019 my daughter was accused of fraud by Barclays Bank. She lost her bank card and told bank via button on app. She then found out someone paid money into the account and withdrew it in the same transaction. Fraud moved in and Barclays threw her out. She then went to Credit Union who gave her an account for her wages to be paid into. Not a great account, she can’t send money to anyone. She has a card that she can buy online but the acc charges her 0.75 for every withdrawal. She has tried many banks to get a better account but the credit checks let her down. It’s been 3 years now and we wondered what she can do. TIA

What do her credit files and mostly importantly CIFAS show for her?

It sounds like your daughter has a CIFAS marker from Barclays, and that stays active for 6 years. Whilst she has that unfortunately it will be extremely unlikely that she will be able to get an account with most banks.

How did the person that stole the card pay money in and withdraw it? Not really possible to do it with just the card without knowing the PIN number, or having access to online banking.
  • Has she tried one of the neo banks like Revolut, Monese, Monzo, Wise, Ziglu or Starling? All of these offer free withdrawals and an ability to pay money into accounts, and all have a free tier

No account available until 6 years passes.

Why didn't she approach Barclays to plead her innocence to stop the cifas marker?

Go to the credit rating board, plenty of people on there who will help.

Approaching any of the banks mentioned by landsberger is pointless as they all check with cifas as well

Revolut, Monese, Wise and Ziglu are not banks even if they provide bank-like services. If they go bust, some or all of your money might be gone, and it could take a very long time for you to get at your funds.

Regardless of their status, they are likely to check CIFAS anyway. Daughter needs to find out what is on CIFAS about her, and also check her credit reference files. Come back when you know what's on there.

OP, if that is your real name you are using, I'd suggest you change it to a user name that makes you (and by connection your daughter) less identifiable.... (I'm not sure how you go about doing that - you may need to message the Forum team)

Sorry this simply isn't true. She can open and operate a basic building  society account without issue

Depending on what kind of CIFAS marker she has, she may not be able to open any UK account.

I have never known anyone get refused a cashplus account, they are actually a fully fscs-registered bank. That'll be a good way to quickly check what kind of fraud marker may be against the name. You can have a free account that offers a max of 9 transactions (and unlimited debit card purchases) per month or a £10 a month account with unlimited transactions.
If they won't give you an account, it's highly likely no one will.
