First time buyer, first time bills

Hi all, been a member since 2009 and often use the site but think this is my first post!
We are first time buyers who have finally scrimped together enough for a deposit (thanks to MSE advice on getting a Help to Buy ISA) and are about to complete on our first flat.

We are daunted by setting up all the new bills with all the companies- especially energy companies in these times, obviously. We have come from a position of renting where all bills were included in the rent so are quite unsure about getting started on this. Are there any basics that in the current climate would be crucial to get right as we consider who and how to get set up with utility bills?
Thanks in advance!

Electricity and gas you need to set up with the current supplier to the property - they may try to sell you a fixed tariff that is more expensive than the capped variable rate, but they must give you the option of going on the variable rate. Photograph the meters on the day you move in. In previous times, you would then change to your choice of supplier, but if you want to be on the variable tariff then staying put may be your best option.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.
