Not stayed there, but been through it (ie the airport) many times. I can thoroughly recommend Zitautos for car hire. You pay cash, but they are excellent and very economical:

Stately trees seem to brush the deep blue sky. Clouds billow to form magestic peaks. The songs of birds fill the air creating symphony upon symphony0 -
only flolwn to Faro, but we stayed in ALVOR which is about 1 hour drive away, nice quiet place full of Irish pubs and loads of eating places. We went in May and it was bloody hot, the sea is freezing though, bloody Atlantic Ocean. All the big powers they've silenced me. So much for free speech and choice on this fundamental human right, and outing the liars.0

Faro itself is not much of a holiday resort, It hasn't got a beach although it's good for a day trip. There are plenty of other "proper" resorts further down the Algarve coast . These range from Faro in the far west , Praia da Rocha , Albufeira (the largest) to Vilamoura and Monte Gordo , near the Spanish border.
As to which resort you choose , it depends on what sort of holiday you want. What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?0 -
The area east of Faro is the quieter end of the Algarve. Tavira is pleasant. To the west of faro there are resorts of every type. Albufeira/Sao Joao is the liveliest. For a more relaxed time Lagos is good.
We went last month, booked flights with Thomsonfly from Coventry, and found accommodation on the web. Wonderful part of the world, great restaurants and cost of living very reasonable too.0 -
just came back from pria da rocha and it is brill, went to faro foe the day on the train and it wasent worth the efort, but that was my view.0

How about Vale do Lobo http://www.madeirahouse.co.uk Glorious sandy beaches, excellent golf courses and a 5 star resort.0

The Hotel Ibis just outside Faro was superb and cheap. Superb pool in grounds. You can get a bus into Faro for 1 Euro 20 (about 80p). But after that you will need to hire a car to get around easily. Quite cheap locally.0

Thanks for all your help everyone. After reading comments I think we have decided to go to Costa Brava instead. Sound like an ok place. Hope we are right!

Thanks again...Being bored is so boring Im bored of it... :rotfl:0
