Vodafone 9.3% increase is it legal?

Hi I got an email today, image of it attached which basically said that the prices I pay is going up by 9.3%

This seems like such a drastic price hike. I know inflation is around 6% atm but this is a bit silly. The frustrating thing is that they don't say it's 9.3% they say it's 5.4% plus 3.9% so it's a little sneaky in my opinion.

Do I really have to get on with it on can I cancel my contract?

Perfectly within the rules of the contract you signed up to, the useless regulator OK'd it.   Next year will be an even bigger hike !

What's sneaky about it?  They clearly spell out that there are two elements, one being an inflationary increase, the other being a rise to cover their investment needs.

Whether you can cancel or not will depend on your contract. Virgin Media permit customers to exit a fixed term if they introduce a price rise, for example.
  • Many mobile operators and ISPs have introduced CPI + X.X% annual increases into their contracts and you would have been notified some time ago.

What did it say in your contract when you signed up?

It's a larger % because inflation is currently going through the roof.  Just be grateful inflation isn't at 15% as it was for a short time in the late 80s or early 90s.

Normally when they hike prices like this you are no longer in a fixed contract and are fre to leave.

There is rules regarding how much they can up the price for people still in tied in contracts with them. Usually the rate of inflation at the time.

Nicely covered in your agreement. So no chance of getting out of contract.

  • just been on to them and they have applied a £30 credit to my account when i threatened to leave  -my account is only £21 per month broadband only until next Oct.
Not much arguing so they must in my opinion they may be on dodgy legal ground with such a price increase.
  • @facebylouise they have got the legal bit as watertight as a duck's backside despite what you may think.

Like all companies, if you have a polite moan you often get a sweetener to retain your business.

If you're on a monthly sim-only contract (or an expired term), it may be worth attempting to negotiate a new contract for the next year to get the cost down.

I've done this for several years and always managed to keep costs roughly to 2012 levels with another provider, as well as maintaining EU roaming for the forseeable future.
