Paying Santander Credit Card with Nationwide Debit Card

Just wondering if anyone else has had trouble doing this?
Every time I try, I instantly get a message that the card authorisation failed, and suggesting I try a different card. Nothing seems to hit the Nationwide at all.
The Nationwide card works perfectly with other merchants, and I successfully made the payment to Santander using Curve with the same underlying card.
I have also made payments to Santander using other Debit cards with no problems. It seems to be specifically the Nationwide card it doesn't like.
Edited to add - please don't suggest "better" ways to make the payment. That's not the question. Thanks.

Forget paying by debit card, set it up as a payee in online banking/the app and just send the money by faster payments instead. Far easier than faffing around trying to pay by debit card
The sort code and account number you need will be on your credit card statement and you use your credit card number as the reference.1 -

You need to ask Nationwide why it is failing.
It could be something security related.Life in the slow lane0 -
Have you tried making a payment over the phone (many credit card providers have an automated service for such things)?0
