monnagran said:basketcase, BLOOD and STONE, come to mind.I'm feeling very lucky. DD's just started a (considerably) better paid job and offered help if I needed it with the bills. ("You've done it often enough for me")I was just thinking that asking to borrow might be a subtle way of communicating that you're not as well off as they are. Also in Otb666's case maybe adding "Can we just knock it off the amount you owe me?"I'd feel a bit mean myself, I know, But not as bad as I would saying "No. You never pay me back and you've more than me to start with. Unless... you can tell me... you don't have a gambling/alcohol/drug problem do you? If you do, I'll help you to get help!"A budget is like a speed sign - a LIMIT not a TARGET!!

We don't buy clothes often and tend to wear them to death, I actually have a lowe alpine T shirt I bought in 1997! footwear is the only other pricy thing we have needed to buy in recent years.

I too have some items of very old much loved clothing. I have a pair of beloved designer jeans bought on sale when I was 17. Over the years they developed knee holes (before it was fashionable) and when the holes got too big I cut them into shorts. Now the bum is getting very thin so I can only wear them for gardening otherwise I could have an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction in public. They fit like a glove and the most comfortable item of clothing I own. I am 45 now and got my moneys worth out if them.8

I still have the coat I bought for my Mother's funeral in 1996. It's wool and cashmere, comes to mid calf and is incredibly warm so still gets worn on very cold days and for winter funerals.3

I have a 29 year old dressing gown. It is worn almost daily. Bought it ready foe hospital when DD was due. I have noticed I can see daylight through it when I peg it on the line. Got a few more years left in it yet.7

My late mum had a new never worn dressing gown in a drawer for 20 year which was a Christmas gift as there was nothing wrong with her old one and it didn't need throwing away, at the time of the new one being brought I think her old one was about 15 years old After 20 years it was moved from the drawer to her 'just in case I need to go to hospital' bag
My winter dressing gown is over 25 years old and so warm and comfortable and the cats have always loved it so I may be turning into my motherLife shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage - Anais Nin6
