basketcase, BLOOD and STONE, come to mind.

I'm feeling very lucky.  DD's just started a (considerably) better paid job and offered help if I needed it with the bills.  ("You've done it often enough for me")

I was just thinking that asking to borrow might be a subtle way of communicating that you're not as well off as they are.  Also in Otb666's case maybe adding "Can we just knock it off the amount you owe me?"

I'd feel a bit mean myself, I know,  But not as bad as I would saying "No.  You never pay me back and you've more than me to start with.  Unless... you can tell me... you don't have a gambling/alcohol/drug problem do you?  If you do, I'll help you to get help!"

We don't buy clothes often and tend to wear them to death, I actually have a lowe alpine T shirt I bought in 1997! footwear is the only other pricy thing we have needed to buy in recent years.

Can beat you on that. I've got a T shirt I bought on a trip to Australia in 1995.

I still have the coat I bought for my Mother's funeral in 1996. It's wool and cashmere, comes to mid calf and is incredibly warm so still gets worn on very cold days and for winter funerals.
