Eon Next - Final Bill really high

Hi I'm hoping someone might be able to give me some guidance with regards to a final bill we have just received for our gas and electricity from Eon Next. We moved into our property on the 22nd October 2021 and were informed the energy provider was Eon Next. We gave opening meter readings but at that time they said it was best not to switch because there weren't any better deals anywhere. We were on a variable tariff which we didn't opt for but simply inherited from the previous owners. We sent regular meter readings and even opted for a Smart Meter which then couldn't be installed to a system error. Last month we switched to Scottish Power and have just received a closing bill for £440 from Eon Next! We were paying a monthly direct debit of £93.85 which Eon Next set but now they are saying we owe this lump sum. I can't understand how a family of 3 could have possible accrued such a debt in just 5 months. I have raised this with Eon Next but they have just said the readings were estimates and the DD was based on that! Any help or similar experiences would be hugely appreciated. There's no way we can pay a lump sum like that on top of our ever growing monthly bills too. Thanks so much in advance.

Were the opening readings used in Oct correct ?
Were the closing readings correct ?
    What were those readings ?
How many gas meter units were billed and how many kWh charged on that bill ?
What units does your gas meter read in, cu ft or m3 ?
The monthly direct debit will only be a guess based on the information the supplier holds on the property, you should have been monitoring your use on an at least monthly basis, the supplier will only do it 6 monthly.  It is quite possible to use that amount of energy over winter but the answers to the questions above may shed some light.

What are the actual usage readings from the day you moved in until your switch away?

Do you agree the usage you are being billed for...even if not the cost?
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.52% of current retirement "pot" (as at end October 2024)

It is also 5 months over winter, so usage will proportionally higher than just a year divided by 12 X 5.

  • Thanks both.

    Opening reading on 22nd October 2021 - Electricity: 41867.00 / Gas - 24383.0
    Closing reading on 2nd March 2022 - Electricity 43232.00 / Gas - 25215.0

Total gas meter units billed - 30.6 units m3
    kWh billed - 1304.5

I'm not entirely sure those figures are correct it's all very confusing to me but it just seems like such a high bill for such a short period (18 weeks)

If it's right it's right I just wanted to get a second opinion before we find a way to pay it!

    Thank you again :)

How many kWh s GAS have you been billed for?

It should be about 11.2 X your M³ usage.

If you DD was based on your usage over a whole year, Inc summer, then your DD was probably to low to have covered winter usage in isolation.

Can you give us the closing meter reading from your previous bill for the gas please?
Also take a look at that bill and tell us what the balance was at the end of it?
From the looks of things you have been using quite a lot of gas over the past few months and building up a debt as your monthly payments were not sufficient to cover the use.
Even so I'm surprised it is as much as £440, but depending on when you made your last DD it is possible.

From your gas meter readings you used 832cu.m which using the 11.2 multiplier gives 9318kWh Can't imagine where you got 30.6cu.m from. Gas was about 4p/kWh on last October's fix so that gas would cost £375 ish. Not including the daily rate.
From your electricity readings you used 1365kWH. At EON.Next's Next Flex rate from last October, about 20p/kWh that would cost £273. So the energy is around £650. Add the standing charges, subtract whatever you've paid and there you are. Could easily owe them £440.

Total balance for gas says £348.26
Closing meter reading for gas - 25215

Last direct debit on the 1st Feb was £93.85

It could well be right but these bills are like a foreign language to me so I wanted to ask the experts before I cough up!
