Phenomenal Increase in Cost of Gas & Electricity!
Options
I've just been notified that my State Pension is increasing by £23.36. My energy usage is not extravagant and across the year my monthly payments cover my usage. I was until this month paying £56.25 a month for my Gas and Electricity from British Gas, that was a total of £675 a year. British Gas have just offered me a new 'Home Energy' fixed tariff at a magnificent total of £235.16 a month, £2,822 a year; that would mean me paying an additional £2,147 over and above the figure I was previously paying. Having followed closely Martin Lewis's information I am now in the process of switching to Eon where on a fixed tariff they have offered me £140.84 a month; £1,690.09 a year. I don't understand why I am having to pay well in excess of a 100% increase. My pensions have not increased by an amount that will help in any way to meet my energy bills; I am in despair as to what to do about this!

Instead of switching to a fix with Eon, you could just stay with British Gas who would put you on their variable tariff when your current deal ends.
It will be more than you pay now but cheaper than any cap offered now.2 -

I do hope you have compared unit rates / daily charges between the 2 offers and not just taken their word on the £ per month.

No don't switch just tell BG you don't want a fix. Just say on the standard variable rate. The fix with Eon will cost you a lot more. Any fix offered at the moment will be too expensive.

@Jayjay53 You must have been very frugal - what is your annual consumption please. I hope you've got your calculations right ? Were you on a fix or variable tariff ?
Do you qualify for the £150 ? Do you also get the Winter Fuel Discount of £200 ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
That's what frustrates me about the electricity market, quoting monthly sums with no mention of the underlying rates, which are often difficult to find. Luckily I'm on a 15p rate until September so at least can put off for a bit the search for the best deal then, but whatever it is I know it'll be a shock.
