First Direct wants email keyed in for extra protection

  •   One assumes that this same technology is going to appear on every kind of financial website such as ISA platforms, HMRC, pensions, shares etc etc.

Well, in this households experience, HMRC has such strict ID verification to even open a personal tax account online that we're 'digitially excluded' from doing so (no passport, driving licence etc...). Keying in an e-mail address woudl be a doddle in comparison....
I'm trying to think what the ID verification proceedures were for FD when I joined up with them.  The thing that works quickly and without any major inconvenience with HMRC is the OTP sent to your mobile after the initial logon.  Maybe this is potentially insecure but I would have thought that FD would be better off going down this route for added security if this is what they wish to do.  But what do I know?
