Dormer alterations - Where do I start?

Hi all,

The roof of my house has multiple dormers, however they are now very old and need to be repaired and probably replaced. I knew this when I bought the house so was prepared for this. I would like to use the opportunity to alter the dormers shape and add solar panels.

As I live in a conservation area, I need to get planning permission for these alterations and adding solar panels.

This is my first house and have no idea where to start with this. Who do I contact to get this started?

I was going to get in contact with architects, get the plans done and the permission sorted, then start contacting builders. I read once that builders have a list of architects they will work with to get the plans sorted (and in my case planning permission) and everything goes through the builder, but this could be completely wrong.

I'm not really sure how to make the first move.
