Octopus increased electricity usage estimate by factor of around 7

I was switched from Avro to Octopus last year for both gas and electric supplies. 
Recently I was emailed advising the d/d payment will almost double. This is much more than I expected, so I checked their figures.


While the Octopus gas usage estimate is similar to the past, their annual electricity estimate is almost seven times higher than my historic and actual usage since switching to them in September. I have been in the house over 10 years.

Typical annual electric usage 4000 kwh over many years.
Avro estimated reading 29 March 2021 85020
actual reading Sept 2021 86900
actual reading today 23 March 2022 89200

avro annual estimate 24 Feb 2022 for electricity 27,909kwh 

Avro estimated annual electricity cost £5805
NB We use far more gas than electricity, so generally the gas proportion of the bill is much higher than for electricity

They tell me the good news is that I am already on their cheapest electricity tariff😀

I assume this is systems issue and have raised it with Octopus.  Has anyone else had a similar experience?

  • Erroneous estimates of historical data usually occur because there is a lack of customer readings. Octopus estimates are usually pretty good.

    Should ideally be providing readings every month
  • Email hello@octopus.energy with two actual meter readings a year apart and they will  do what is necessary. You can also do your own annual cost estimation and set the DD amount that you wish to pay via the App.
  • Thank you both for your comments. I received a revised statement from Octopus this morning, correcting the annual electricity estimate from over 27000 to 4000 kWh. 

    Kudos to Octopus for correcting this within  24 hours.

    Other recent Octopus customers may benefit from checking their statements.
