Should I upgrade to Windows 11?

Hi all

Ive been usining Windows 10 for a couple of years, and Im comfortable using it.

Im buying a new laptop. I know which one I want from Dell. Im buying one which has "Windows 10 Pro (Windows 11 Pro license included)". I presumed this meant that it would come with Windows 10 installed and then - whenever I was ready - I could upgrade to Windows 11. However, theyve just confirmed that I can only upgrade to Windows 11 within 10 days of when I turn on the laptop!

I dont know how much longer Windows 10 is going to be supported for. Has Windows 11 been out long enough for all the bugs to be fixed? Has anyone any experience for Windows 11?

Im just wanting people opinions/thoughts on it. Perhaps I wont bother upgrading to Windows 11, but seems a waste seeing as Ive bought the Windows 11 license.

Thanks

I bought a new Dell in November, as soon as I got it I had Windows 11 installed (while my man was doing lots of other stuff). At a subsequent update it died so had to get my man back again to re-install 11. It's been fine since then, there's hardly any difference between 10 and 11 as far as I can see.

To answer one of your questions Windows 10 will be supported until 2025.

Thanks guys. On my other laptop Im still using Windows 7! (I currently have 2 laptops). As soon as I got a laptop with Windows 10 on I disabled all the useless functionality (tiles for games, news, weather etc) and tried to make it look/act lie Windows 7.

Im just reading up on Windows 11, and it seems it has removed a lot of the pointless stuff from Windows 10, and added some helpful features. So - compared to where my head was an hours ago - I think Im ready for Windows 11!!

Having said that - I dont like the way they have centered everything! Theyre trying to make a desktop app look like a mobile app - which it isnt!! I have read that there are ways you can even fix this to the left.

"... At a subsequent update it died so had to get my man back again to re-install 11.  .... " This is my primary concern for installing Windows 11!!

Just an opinion, but lots of folk get hung up on the last but one version of Windows when the reality is that if you're reasonably competent and are prepared to learn a few new ways there's no real reason not to move on. If we all stuck to the OS we first liked a lot of people would still be at 3.1, or NT, 95, 98, 98SE, W2K (my personal favourite but haven't seen it in yonks), or XP etc. Not many are, and those that chose to stick at Vista, 7 or 8.n are welcome to it. Old versions do fall out of support though and clinging on to an OS for no real reason other than being comfortable with isn't the best argument.

W11 will be different to 10 but not significantly, even though under the hood there are more changes. In a few short weeks of use you'll become quite used to it and W11 will be your new normal (to coin a phrase). And under it all, the OS is there to run your programs and apps. Provided MS haven't released a real dogs breakfast (and they haven't) AND you aren't clinging on to 3rd party apps that really should have died with 98SE or XP, you should be ok.

Go with it, accept that change rather than being gradually left behind.

Mainly through work but we must have been through almost every iteration of Windows bar 98, from 3.1 onwards. Each one is new for a short while then you forget ever being that bothered that (e.g.) W7 was ok and the new is slightly different. So were all the rest for various reasons. No reason to assume that 11 won't be either.

No idea where they get 10 days from you can upgrade W10 to W11 at any time provided your system meets the W11 requirements.

Unless it is something specific to the Pro licence ?

Could be wrong but I think the 10 days might refer to the period of time after installing Win 11 that you have to revert back to Win 10 if you change your mind

To the OP Win 11 is fine and quite easy to use, most features are the same, a few graphical tweaks here and there and that’s about it 😊

Hmm, Ive just checked the transcript (I spoke to their Support via Live Chat) and he said "You can upgrade the windows 10 to windows 11 within the 10 days from the day you start the machine for the first time ". So perhaps Ive read that wrong? I take that as being I have to upgrade to W11 within 10 days of starting the computer.

Pretty sure that’s not the case, have got customers at work with year old laptops C and they’re ok to upgrade so you should be fine too 😊
