Hi all,
We're moving to a house with solar panels which are owned outright by the current owners. I'm unsure of what we need to do to get the ownership of them over to us. Do we do that via their current energy provider or do the sellers need to arrange that process?
Many thanks in advance.

Your solicitors will need to ensure the appropriate paperwork is completed. It could be a decent amount of money each year so you want to make sure it is sorted correctly. It's not via the energy provider but the company that pays the FITs.

See link for Eon, others will be similar. There is paperwork to complete for ownership transfer but it should be solicitor making sure this paperwork is correctly filled in by seller and them.

When I sold my house with solar panels, I left a signed FIT transfer form in the kitchen with a generation meter reading. Your solicitor should have asked the vendor for the MCS Certificate; electrical certificate and all warranties as part of the purchase search process. FIT payments have nothing to do with an energy supplier per se. Your FIT contract is an agreement with the Government. It follows that you can change your supplier at will: your FIT contract will remain with the existing FIT payer.

Also make sure you get any certification documents that go with the system, like MCS for example...

You need to tranfer the existing FIT contract that the present owner has, to you.  It will probably be with a different "provider" to your normal energy bills. Don't worry about that and don't try and change it.

The FIT works differently, you submit quarterly generation meter readings and they pay you quarterly.  Just treat is as completely separate to your normal energy usage.

Take a generation meter reading and a photograph of the generation meter reading and make sure the solicitor (or you) starts the transfer process on exchange day.

Many thanks everyone. I will speak to my solicitor to make sure the transfer happens.

Do you know how many panels and when they were installed?

There are 16 panels installed in 2015. From the info I have from my solicitor, I just need to complete an eon transfer of ownership form providing the TA10 fixtures and fittings form to show we now own the panels with the property. The owners say they sent the mcs certificate to npower in 2015 and it then changed hands to eon. So they don't have the certificate. Would this be an issue?

Depending on when in 2015 you should get about 20p a kwh and maybe £800 a year.

Thanks, sounds decent! I've asked my solicitor to ensure the sellers track down the mcs certificate for us.

Surely there is a register where you can get a duplicate if you even need a certificate?
