During the week there were some gorgeous cloudless days and my routine was to plug the granny charger into the car from around 11 until 2ish for around 25 miles a day, get a hot tank of water using the iboost diverter and later have the oil-filled radiator on in my north-facing lounge which gets a bit chilly in these shoulder months without the wood-burner on. Plus I did some cooking with solar and due to the buffer on the iboost also exported a little bit.

If I were installing now I might get a more sophisticated diverter with more than one outlet but I'm happy that I'm using my 4kWp to a reasonable extent. A family would be able to use even more of the production than this single person household.

I'd like to get a 2018+ leaf but I'd have to spend £10k to switch, I don't know how many miles it would take to start saving money (aside from the ethical side of not burning petrol).

£7000 buys a LOT of petrol (43000 miles in my case!).

A friend mentioned dumping excess solar into a storage heater at this time of the year, is that really a feasible thing to do? Can you get freestanding ones you can activate with a smart plug?

(Although a 30 litre tea urn would let you dump 3kWh or so while keeping the kitchen warm, plus you'd always have tea!)
... A while ago I posted asking opinions on one of these.

It uses around 600w to boil and an then an average of 50w or so to keep warm. So very solar friendly.

Anyway, we have been using it for 3 or 4 months now and am very pleased. Surprisingly nice to have hot water for tea always on tap.

Is that 50w keeping it at 98c?

Give or take. It cycles at 100w but is on about 50% of the time.

I have ours set to 85 degrees. Partly because it is more efficient but I also I think because the tea tastes better with a lower temp.

(There is 2W mentioned in the blurb but that is nonsense.)
