Chromebook image files question

When I open an image file on my Chromebook, the top quarter of the screen is taken up with a bunch of tools (zoom, crop/rotate, bin and suchlike) on a black background which wasn't there until yesterday. What have I done to make this happen, and how can I put things back to how they used to be?

Hi, how are you opening the image files?
If using the Files app then the only way I am aware to view images without the black border/edit icons is to use "full screen" function key (5th key from left on top row).
I tend to open images using Google Photos.
Hope that helps.
