Facebook Marketplace and Stripe refunding my money with no dispute.

Hello. Wondering if someone can advise. I put a pair of trainers up on facebook marketplace. They sold for £270 and the transaction went through Stripe. Several people tried to scam me and the software / systems they have managed to stop the transactions. So, eventually someone contacted me who wanted to buy them and paid through stripe with a credit card. I waited until the transaction had been processed and I could see the green "Approved" wording on the payment. As far as I'm concerned, that's a done deal. Packed up the trainers and sent them via signed for delivery. I have proof of post and proof they were signed for.

So, a few days later I have a look at getting the money from my Stripe account into my actual bank.
It would seem they've refunded the money to the buyer. There was an email from Stripe saying that they cannot accept payments into my account due to fraud protection but this arrived two days after the payment was approved and I'd sent them out. The money was refunded without any other contact.

I've contacted Stripe who are basically saying "oh Facebook refunded that, not us. Go and chase them". Obviously, I'm trying but there's pages and pages of FAQs and "was this helpful?" questions but it's seemingly impossible to actually talk to someone relevant.

I find Stripe's response of "go chase someone else" as completely unacceptable.
What are people's opinions of what I should do here? I don't have time to spend hours and hours phoning, calling, trawling through hundreds of pages of FAQ's just to get fobbed off.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

  • Sadly I’ve had a very similar issue. I’ve posted about it here: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6364923/facebook-marketplace-and-stripe-fraud-problem/p1?new=1

I just can’t understand how a payments company can be allowed to operate like this, especially one that is promoted by Facebook.

Did you make any further progress?
  • Also, I read that someone with a similar issue managed to get their money back via their bank, then closed their Stripe account. But Stripe re-opened their account and has been charging and building up fees ever since. Be careful.
  • Money from Stripe has started coming into my personal account even though I don't sell goods and have never even heard of them. My bank cant give me any help. I'd like to know whose money I'm receiving, the same amounts every month. Looking at reviews here and in the USA, a lot of people have lost their money as there accounts have been closed.
