Expected cost for 24m (14 bays) of closeboard fence panels with concrete posts

Options
Our garden wall came down during storm Eunice and we've decided to replace it with a fence. I've had several people round but I've so far only had 1 solid quote, many others have ummed and ahhed or given silly numbers.

We're in the South East of England, and the job would involved breaking through the base of the old wall to install the posts. We need 14 bays and there are 4x 45 degree corners so 4x additional posts are needed with 2x 1ft gravel boards and 5ft panels per bay.

What's a fair price for this kind of job? I had one "company" quote £7K... when I asked for a written quote he handed me his leaflet and said "write it on there, that's your quote". I appreciate everyone is busy, but surely I should be able to get a fair quote for this kind of job?

My daughter in Kent has a quote for 9 x 6ft panels, new concrete posts and barge boards, new gate and 2 sections to be made up to 8ft as neighbouring plot is higher - £5k. It's difficult to tell if prices are inflated as a combination of area/ prices of materials/lots of storm damage, but a year ago in the SW I paid £2200 for 14 x 6ft closeboard panels with concrete posts and bargeboards!

  • Seems like things are getting out of hand and some companies are trying to take advantage. £7K  :s and then not even making an effort to close the job by giving a written quote -  :/

If it helps at all, I paid just over £2k for materials alone during the first lockdown for 17 bays with concrete posts and gravel boards. Given how much everythimg has gone up by and from your description of having to go through the base of an old wall, 7k might not be too bad.

I priced up the materials myself, I can get them for under £2k. There's no way £7K is a fair price, I could take a whole month off work to do it myself and still be better off.

Yeah so this is the other thing, I've had 3 people not even follow up with a quote.

I've been trying to get my roof done for over a year now - Had several quotes ranging from OK to taking the p$$, and one was supposed to start work last August. No show, so been going through the same rigmarole again, and hoping it will get started in May.
Same for replacing four windows and a door - Had three suppliers in (not Anglain or their ilk), and only one quote back so far. £4K is way too much, so the hunt continues...
