Washing up bars

  • Thanks for all the replies folks. I think I will try the refill option for the next wee while. I have to cost it out and it's only ecover brand but I can't stand all the single use waste in the kitchen. Big love to you all.
  • Oops, forgot to say, I am now looking for a soap shaker and once I have that I will take the leap to washing up bars. I have invested in a stainless steel washing up basin, which should last the rest of my life. It was expensive but it should have paid for itself in 4 years over plastic.

I have made lots of little (old style moneysaving) eco changes over the last few years and regretted none of them.

Just googled it… I use a crochet bag I made to put bits of soap in and then use that for hand washing. Like a cloth and soap in one.

When my kids were small we used to buy a thin sponge and slice along the side and put the little bits of soap in and then they'd use that to wash in the bath.  Much easier for small hands than bits of soap that keep slipping out!

  • The soap shaker is like a long handled sieve (or a BBQ fish cage) that you put your dish soap bar in.  You swish it around in the water and it puts soap in the water and makes bubbles at the same time. They are really old style but coming back into plastic free vogue in Australia and NZ.  I don't want to have one shipped half way around the world so I'm looking at repurposing another utensil e.g. A BBQ fish cage that I can put a bar of dish soap in.  Waiting for the seasonal reductions 😁

The cage helps the bar dry as well making it more efficient.

Just to note Ecover is owned by SC Johnson, so might be cheaper but not as green as they promote.

I intend to switch to a solid bar, rather than refills as I use solid bars for my hair and they work well so hopefully will for washing up as well.

    Are these said item?
They are very popular in Australia, surprised with us in the uk trying to cut back on plastic, that there isnt a demand for them. A gap in the market perhaps?
